Zoran Corporation Introduces Breakthrough Frame Rate Conversion Product for Worldwide DTV Market at Computex in Taiwan
SupraFRC™ 201 Processors Dramatically Improve 120Hz Video Display Quality
Sunnyvale, Calif. – June 2, 2009 - Zoran Corporation (Nasdaq: ZRAN) announced that its SupraFRC™ 201 Frame Rate Conversion (FRC) processor platforms will be demonstrated to qualified LCD and DTV manufacturers at Computex in Taiwan, June 2 to 6.
The SupraFRC™ 201 processor is based on patent-pending technology, which is fundamentally different from and better than conventional frame rate conversion methods used by other vendors. The need to reduce motion blur on LCD TVs has driven the introduction of 100/120Hz panels and the development of Frame Rate Conversion solutions, since all current DTV content is broadcast in 50/60Hz. In addition, studio movie content, including Blu Ray content, uses 24 images per second which requires conversion to 50/60Hz or 100/120Hz for best viewing quality. These conversions typically introduce motion artifacts known as judder.
Zoran’s unique and proprietary SupraFRC™ technology is designed to produce sharper images and reduce judder by using cutting-edge technologies based on innovative advanced algorithms. With its multi-scale geometrical processing, the solution robustly processes images while requiring minimal computational power compared with traditional solutions. Zoran’s solution bypasses quality limitations of traditional block-search algorithms, and effectively enabling artifact-free true-FRC for flat panel televisions as well as other video consumer electronics products.
“Our new SupraFRC™processor demonstrates superior quality and cost performance for OEMs competing in the 120Hz DTV market. Our innovative approach to video processing yields outstanding video quality without the common artifacts introduced by current state-of the industry motion compensation technologies,” said Ram Ofir, senior vice president and general manager, Zoran’s Home Entertainment division.
The innovative SupraFRC™ technology was developed by the Paris-based Let It Wave, SA acquired by Zoran last year. This team created new algorithms based on bandlet transforms and their derivatives. Instead of relying on a single motion computation per pixel, these algorithms allow for optimized geometric processing that provide unprecedented correction for blurring, halo effects, ghosting and shadowing artifacts. Television viewers immediately see improved image quality on sets using this technology.
The SupraFRC™ product performs full frame rate conversion from 24Hz Blu-Ray content, through 25/30Hz legacy TV up to 100/120Hz, and all frequencies in between; and full 4:4:4 color resolution as opposed to 4:2:2 in conventional devices. Two versions of the SupraFRC™ processor are available; a single memory version for mainstream televisions and a double memory version for supporting very high-performance 55-inch and above panels. Additionally, by cascading two SupraFRC™ 201 processors, a true 240Hz LCD TV solution is realized without complex circuitries.
